Do you love Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networks but hate the rigmarole of signing into multiple websites in order to stay connected? Social Connector for Microsoft Office 2013 makes it easy. Rather than visiting various social network sites one by one, Social Connector brings all of your networks directly into Microsoft Outlook.

Connecting the Social Connector

Earlier editions of Social Connector required a separate download, but Social Connector for Microsoft Office 2013 is preinstalled in Office 2013. Though preinstalled, it’s not turned on by default. To enable Social Connector, follow these steps:

  • Launch Outlook 2013
  • Go to File > Info > Account Settings
  • Click Social Network Accounts
  • Select the desired social network (such as LinkedIn or Facebook)
  • Provide your user name and password for the desired network

What Social Connector Does

Once connected to your social networks, Social Connector will display status updates and profiles directly in your Outlook inbox. Even if you are not actively following your contacts on social networks, their public profiles – and their photos – will now appear in Outlook. This is a handy feature that allows you to learn more about casual contacts such as vendors and suppliers whenever you receive email messages.

Social Connector for Microsoft Office 2013 pulls information from public profiles and places it neatly in Outlook. In addition to viewing messages and public contact information from your contacts, you’ll also see their latest activities, other email messages to you, attachments, and meeting information.

Viewing the Contact Card

Social Connector also pulls in contact information from social networks, placing it in a location called “Contact Card.” To view a Contact Card, do the following:

  • Right-click a contact’s name in Outlook
  • You will see some basic contact information
  • Click the small down-arrow located in the lower right corner
  • View contact information
  • Contact-Card2

The Contact Card contains a set of tabs that include: Contact, Notes, Organization, What’s New, and Membership. Because Social Connector pulls contact information dynamically from each contact’s social network profiles, most of your contact information will be current (assuming your contacts regularly update their social network profiles when their contact information changes).

Viewing Social Network Activity with Social Connector

Connecting contact information across networks is but one part of Social Connector’s appeal. The other part is the ability to interact socially without having to leave Outlook.  Instead, click on the People Pane and view real-time status updates. A training course for Microsoft Office 2013 will be a tremendous help.
